January is National Bath Safety Month

January is National Bath Safety Month, reminding you to take some extra precautions. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1-4 years and it takes only a few inches of water for a child to drown. After pools, bathtubs are the second leading location where children drown. Nearly 90 children drown inside the home every year, and two-thirds of these deaths occur in a bathtub. It happens quickly and silently. Bathing is such a routine activity that we often neglect to take proper precautions while we’re in what is absolutely one of the most dangerous places in our home. Bath time can be stressful because it happens at the end of the day when you’ve got a lot of things to do. When too many things are happening at once, it can increase the risk of injuries. Unintentional bathtub drownings can be preventable. Constant adult supervision is the key to drowning prevention.
